Donnie Yen’s The Monkey King

Here is the final trailer to The Monkey King movie which will be released on January 30, 2014. The Monkey King is a retelling of the origin of Sun Wukong, the protagonist of the Chinese classical novel Journey to the West.

Here is the official U.S. teaser trailer for the Donnie Yen‘s The Monkey King

Donnie Yen’s major 3D film The Monkey King unveiled its official character posters. Check it out.

A joint venture between Hong Kong and China, and is directed by Hong Kong director Cheang Pou Soi, The Monkey King is set for release on January 31, 2014.

Director Cheang took some liberties with the original material, rearranging plot elements and fleshing out characters in order to tell a more complete, touching story.

Shot over a period of six months using IMAX 3D technology, the team spent an additional two years to perfect the special effects scenes. The story is inspired by the first part of Chinese classic Journey to the West, and details Monkey King Sun Wukong’s birth and rebellion against the Heavens.

In order to create such striking characters, the producers of The Monkey King invited a Hollywood special effects team, as well as three well-known Chinese designers to join their group. William Chang is a film editor, production designer, and art director who has worked on all of Wong Kar Wai’s movies, Kenneth Yee won a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Costume and Makeup Design for his work in Curse of the Golden Flower, and acclaimed costume designer Guo Pei created the outfits for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Awards Ceremony.

Neil Gaiman is writing scripts based on the Journey to the West story about a monkey fighter. Seems we have already seen this before in martial arts movie Forbidden Kingdom, where Jet Li played Monkey king. On a related note, Stephen Chow has been trying to remake his own take on the story, Chinese Odyssey, while another company has been trying to go with a 3D version featuring Chow Yun-Fat, Donnie Yen, Aaron Kwok.

No sure I want to see it, but let’s wait for some stills and trailer.
