Warner Brothers has revealed that Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Taika-hen), the first of two live-action Rurouni Kenshin sequel films, is the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film of 2014 as of September 5.
Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno opened in Japan on August 1, and in three days, it sold 645,086 tickets for 822,734,430 yen (about US$8 million). In the process, it garnered the biggest opening of any Japanese live-action film this year. The film had earned 3 billion yen (US$28.3 million) after 16 days, and 4 billion yen (US$37.7 million) after 28 days.
The second sequel film, Rurouni Kenshin: Densetsu no Saigo-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends), opens in Japan on Saturday. Advanced sales for the film are 150% higher than the advanced sales for Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno.

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, has had a stellar run between its film festival appearance in Montreal for Fantasia 2014, as well as in Japan where it sold over six-hundred thousand tickets on the weekend of August 1, becoming Japan’s biggest weekend opener of the year.

Synopsis: An assassin named Shishio Makoto was once contracted by the government, but has since become obsessed with tearing it down. Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc and Rurouni Kenshin: The End of A Legend Arc will be released in Japan on August 1, 2014 and September 13, 2014.
If you’re not familiar with 2012′s Rurouni Kenshin, it’s an adaptation of the popular 90′s samurai action manga/anime series (known as Samurai X in America) by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The story revolves around a former assassin who resorts to using the dull end of his blade to subdue his enemies.

Announcements have just been made that two more live action films will be added to the film series and production will begin next summer. The new films will cover the fan-favorite Kyoto arc of the manga, specifically the Great Kyoto Fire and Legend’s End storylines. Satoh will be reprising his role as Kenshin.
Rurouni Kenshin, one of the most popular anime and manga series ever, had its successful adaptation into a live action feature film last year. The film directed by Ōtomo Keishi, which opened in Japan last August, was a critical and commercial success. It starred Satoh Takeru (Kamen Rider Den-O, Beck) as Himura Kenshin and Takei Emi (For Love’s Sake / Ai to Makoto) as the heroine Kamiya Kaoru.
